Founded in 1901, Defiance Hospital has been an anchor institution in the Defiance community for well over a century

In 1998, the Defiance Hospital Board of Trustees made the important decision to affiliate with ProMedica, a large Toledo-based healthcare system. Together, Defiance Hospital and ProMedica established a vision to build a new, state of the art hospital to serve Defiance and the surrounding communities for decades to come. In the summer of 2002, that vision was realized when the Defiance Regional Medical Center, located at 1200 Ralston Ave opened to the community. The new hospital offered an expanded array of healthcare services while maintaining the same compassionate care that the Defiance community came to know and trust. Since opening the new site in 2002, the rebranded ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital (PDRH) has been a leader in the delivery of safe, high-quality care with great patient experiences.

Today, ProMedica is a very different healthcare organization than it was 20 years ago. In 2010, ProMedica reestablished its strategic foundation by updating its mission, vison, and values. With the simple, yet ambitious, mission to improve health and well-being, ProMedica has centered its attention on finding ways to improve health beyond the healthcare services that happen in a traditional hospital setting in addition to the ongoing commitment to provide highly reliable care. With that mission as a foundation, and with a vision of becoming a national leader in addressing social factors that impact health, ProMedica has made several strategic investments to support that effort. Today, ProMedica operates hospitals, physician practices, nursing homes, hospice and home health care agencies, assisted and memory care communities, and a regional health insurance plan, reaching 28 states. In addition, ProMedica has established a position of leadership nationally in addressing the social determinants of health through heavy investments in social services in the communities it serves.

In Defiance, PDRH continues to strive for great clinical outcomes and patient experiences while offering a wide variety of services in a convenient location. Since the opening of the current site, PDRH has expanded services to meet the growing community healthcare needs. For more than a decade, PDRH has offered convenient access to advanced cardiac testing and treatment at the Sam Hornish Family Heart Center, located within the hospital walls. The hospital also includes a Women’s Center, focused on offering compassionate care to meet the unique healthcare needs of women throughout their lifespan. PDRH is the site of the region’s only certified trauma program and has a 10-bed inpatient psychiatric unit. All of this in addition to the reliable inpatient intensive care and general medical/surgical units. All of ProMedica’s patients are screened for social needs as a regular part of their medical care. As social needs are uncovered, ProMedica is committed to assisting patients with resources to address those needs.

In 2018, PDRH opened a 40,000 square foot medical office building, the second medical office building (MOB) on the PDRH campus, to meet the growing demand for healthcare services. The new MOB offers a wide variety of services including eye care, orthopedics, behavioral health services, heart and vascular care, and a multi-specialty clinic which includes a rotating roster of physician specialists and sub-specialists. The new MOB also contains the Defiance Total Rehab site which offers outpatient physical, occupational, and speech therapy, in addition to both cardiac and pulmonary rehab services. The original medical office building hosts two of the areas largest primary care practices (Defiance Family Practice & Defiance Internal Medicine), as well as obstetrics & gynecology, general surgery, pain management, and others.

The ProMedica Defiance campus is also home to Kaitlyn’s Cottage, a unique respite getaway for families with loved ones facing significant physical and cognitive challenges. Kaitlyn’s Cottage serves families from three states and fourteen counties in the northwest Ohio region. The cottage provides daytime, weekend, and overnight accommodations for its participants, offering a variety of activities that enrich the lives of those they serve. Kaitlyn’s Cottage offers summer camps and special events in addition to its traditional respite-like services.

ProMedica is committed to fulfilling its mission in the Defiance community by investing in meaningful community efforts such as the expansion of the Defiance YMCA and the creation of the Defiance Splash Pad. ProMedica has also been integral in supporting local economic development efforts, and members of the hospital leadership team are active in community collaborative efforts, sharing experience and expertise with local boards and serving on special interest committees.
