Four Flags of Freedom: A Lasting Tribute to Our Local Veterans

Updated: 5 days ago

The Four Flags of Freedom project has finally been completed in Defiance County, Ohio, and stands as a powerful and moving tribute to the brave men and women who have served our country with honor and courage. Four towering 120-foot flagpoles hoist enormous 30'x60' flags, each one a stirring symbol of the sacrifices made by our local veterans. As you drive past this awe-inspiring monument, you can't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude and respect for those who have given so much to defend our freedom.

  • The Premier Bank flag flies high in recognition of those currently serving, who put their lives on the line every day to protect our way of life.

  • The Keller flag pays homage to the heroes who made it home, forever changed by their experiences but proud to have done their duty.

  • The ProMedica flag solemnly acknowledges those who were injured in the line of duty, their bodies and minds bearing the scars of their selfless service.

  • The Werlor flag poignantly reminds us of the ultimate sacrifice made by those who did not make it home, their memory forever etched in the hearts of a grateful nation.

This breathtaking monument is a testament to the unbreakable spirit of our veterans and a powerful reminder of the debt we owe to those who have served.

Community Support:

This project has blossomed into reality thanks to the unwavering support of our incredible community and its dedicated leaders. Their collective passion and commitment have made it possible to honor those who serve our country. Below, you'll find insights from the Four Flags project team about their experiences and the significance of the project:

Bryan Keller, CEO of Keller Logistics Group, "The people of Defiance, and of Keller in particular, want to honor our military. We are proud of our current and former military personnel and appreciate what all they have sacrificed for this country. Supporting Four Flags of Freedom provides a visual display of our support for current military personnel and veterans in our community."

Jim Williams, EVP Market President of Premier Bank, said, “I’m honored to be part of this momentous tribute to our friends, neighbors, and relatives who protect our freedoms. On behalf of Premier Bank and our employees, thank you for creating this lasting recognition.”

Keith Burmeister, President of ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital, shared his pride in being part of this initiative: “We have cared for many veterans over the years, and we are proud to contribute to this important project.”

Brok Coburn of Werlor highlighted the connection between his organization and the veterans who founded it: “With Werlor being established by two veterans, Jerry Wertz, and Tom Taylor, it was an easy decision for us to support such a meaningful project. These flags have become true landmarks for our community, and we take pride in being one of the sites for the Four Flags of Freedom.”

Mick Pocratsky, a Defiance County Commissioner, reflected on his role in the project: “Sitting on the CIC Board gave me a firsthand view of this initiative. I immediately sought approval from the

Board of County Commissioners, and I’m excited about the prospect of placing more flags around Defiance County.”

“With these 4 Flags, we have set a community standard. Their billowing prominence alters the view of our landscape to one of pride, honor, and commitment to those that have or are currently serving in our Armed Forces. It is a talking piece not only for adults, but for our children. I am in awe every time I pass by them and thankful for what they stand for.” David Kern – Defiance County Commissioner

Defiance Mayor, Mike McCann, spoke about the impact this project has on local veterans: “We have veterans who live in and around our great City, and we thank them every day. These four flags represent the brave men and women who have stood as guardians of liberty, defenders of justice, and protectors of peace. You’ve walked through the fires of conflict, carrying the weight of a nation’s hope on your shoulders. You’ve endured hardships, faced fears, and sacrificed much – your time, your safety, and often, your dreams – to ensure that freedom endures. You embody selflessness, serving not only your country but also the generations who come after you. Your service reminds us of the true cost of freedom, and your stories inspire us to be better citizens, neighbors, and friends. These flags are for you!”

Paige Wesche, Assistant Executive Director of Defiance County Economic Development, shared her personal connection to the project: “While this might not fit the mold of a typical 'economic development' project, it has been my absolute favorite to work on. Despite the challenges we faced, seeing each flag standing tall makes every setback worthwhile. We’ve created a legacy, and I hope these flagpoles demonstrate that Defiance County truly cares about our veterans and is a wonderful place to live, work, and do business.”

Together, we have built something meaningful that not only honors our veterans but strengthens the bonds within our community. Thank you to everyone who rallied together to make this project a reality!

Legacy of the Flags:

To uphold the legacy of these majestic flags, the Defiance County Economic Development organization has embarked on an ambitious goal to raise $10,000 each year for the essential purpose of replacing these symbols of resilience and sacrifice. By ensuring that these flags continue to wave proudly, we honor the memory of those who fought for our freedom and inspire future generations to cherish and uphold the values they represent.

May these four flags stand tall and unwavering in the face of time, reminding all who pass by of the profound cost of liberty. Let their presence spark a flame of patriotism within our hearts, encouraging us to reflect on our shared history and instilling in us a deep sense of gratitude.
